I ♥ Basecamp

I’ve been using Basecamp for years now.

I was first introduced to it at Spring Digital in 04 and opened my first personal account in 05. I’ve always intended to post about it and try explain why it’s such an essential piece of software. However, Basecamp‘s genius is hard to define in a single blog post as it does so much! And the effect of Basecamp is subtle — sure, it does to-dos, messages, chat & milestones, but so do a lot of other pieces of software. Basecamp just happens to do these things better than the competition and in a way that can transform your own thinking, effectiveness and profession.

And if that isn’t enough to convince you to try it, it has only cost me a little over a thousand bucks for these years of happy project management.

I beg to differ… Basecamp may work beautifully for you, but has worked miserable for my team and switching after you’ve already established your site and trained your customers/partners can be painful. We use OnStage now, but there are clearly many options available. I would encourage you readers to evaluate several of these systems and find one that really works for them before locking into one system.

Fair enough, it’s not for everyone.

Switching and communicating the Basecamp system to teams and clients is tough and time consuming. I make a lot of effort in this area, but I think it tends to pay off. When it does, I get a lot of satisfaction from sitting back and watching team members work on tasks with clients without my input.

OnStage looks remarkably similar to Basecamp, but sure, there are many options out there. This whole space is getting hotter all the time, it’s a good time to go shopping for a project management system.

No doubt, getting your entire team (in particular, customers) to use any of these systems can be a challenge. I completely agree with you that it is very satisfying and well worth it once you do get everyone up and running.

That’s ultimately the virtual-office holy grail. It’s not perfect, but we’re getting there!
