The time has come to re-brand this site!
As a company we are doing more development, WordPress and social network work these days, and whilst we still do a lot of marketing with AdWords, we need a new website that works better for us.
So, we’ve bought a new domain name: necessarymaterials.com, but how do we re-brand and keep all the nice link juice and SEO flowing? We need to maintain all of the Sky Rocket posts and traffic under this new brand and domain name.
If anyone has any tips or tutorials for this, please let me know in the comments…

A friend of mine emailed this morning asking why the blog I told her to set-up for her company isn’t doing very well. She is frustrated because she is writing good posts but her Page Rank score is still stuck on 0.
I post my advice here for her and for others….
PR is complicated, sure time is a factor, but so are a number of other things. You’re best off looking at analytics and looking at individual hits for the time being (next 6 months).
You need to start looking at the traffic in more detail, did you ever install any analytics? Like we suggested…
To make you feel better: PickupPal.com has a page rank of 5 (very high) and that took 8 months and a lot of hard work and budget. Skyrocket has a lower PR, but we still get a considerable amount of traffic.
There is a lot more you can do; should be doing; and paying us to help you do. The following is listed in order of priority:
- Install and use analytics (WordPress Stats, Google Analytics or NetInsight)
- Be more open with your company’s content (you haven’t really done this yet…)
- Add something to the Blogosphere that isn’t already out their
- Give something valuable away for free
- Write posts every single day
- Your WordPress account could do with being tuned and a number of plugins need to be installed that will help the user experience and your SEO ranking (we can help with this)
- Design a WordPress theme that is in tune with your companies brand (we can help with that)
- There are many styles of post that can be more attractive to readers. A classic one is the list post, or “10 best ways to get a job”. Something about a numbered bullet list of advice stuff seems to work. You’ve probably seen similar posts on other blogs: “10 best Firefox plugins”, “100 best WordPress themes”. These types of posts do perform better than the average.
Does that help, Emma?

Could this document kill the expensive, hocus-pocus SEO industry? Probably not, but it’s nice to see Google finally offering some concrete advice to websites. This should be required reading for any web designer or developer:
Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide
I particularly like this graphic, as it neatly describes the screen real estate used by organic and paid search listings. What’s really compelling is how much prominence PPC has on this page.

Paid traffic
Paid traffic is online traffic that is bought, commonly referred to as PPC (Pay-Per-Click), CPC (Cost-Per-Click), CPM (Cost-Per-1,000-Impressions) & CPA (Cost-Per-Acquisition).
Benefits:
- Immediate results
- Unlimited keywords
- Keywords are flexible
- Daily budget can be easily controlled
- Paid traffic generally converts much higher than Organic
- More control over ad copy
- More control of ad placement
- Only small design and code changes required on the site
Disadvantages:
- The costs can increase as competition increases
- Certain verticals such as Real Estate and Travel can be very competitive
Organic traffic
Organic traffic can come from people typing-in your URL to a browser, finding you in organic search listings on sites like Google or seeing your link on 3rd-party sites. As you can’t directly buy organic traffic, there are ways to make your site more likely to receive it; this process is loosely referred to as SEO (Search Engine Optimisation).
Benefits:
- It’s Free!
- If you get to the top of the organic search results on Google for a popular keyword you can get incredible volumes of traffic
Disadvantages:
- Not instant, can be a time-consuming process sometimes requiring a major website re-design
- Ranking can not be estimated precisely
- Expensive to implement
- Ranking is subject to change without warning
- SEO is Voodoo; a mysterious and somewhat underground practice. This is because certain SEO practices are deliberate attempts to fool search engines
- Search engines (Google) frown on certain SEO practices because they can effect the validity of their organic listings
