There are many, many slideshow plugins for WordPress, but Slidepost is very different. We built Slidepost to break away from the laptop screen and help you display your posts on more communal screens like LCD TVs. It’s a little rough and around the edges at the moment, but this is only version 1.0. We hope to iterate this plugin further with some feedback from the community. The current version was completed for some client work, but we think it could have more wider scope and uses for others. We look forward to hearing your suggestions…

Slidepost relies on some awesome jQuery libraries by Flesler, many thanks to him and the jQuery project.

Export to Text plugin options

Last year we built Export to Text, it was partly an experiment in writing plugins and partly an attempt to satisfy a desire for more linear text-based exporting of posts. WordPress is not lacking in export options, but we like to use Excel, and we like to line things up line by line. Downloading WP data as XML has many advantages, but parsing and reading are not easy tasks.

Writing this plugin has been a rewarding experience. Through interacting with the WordPress community and listening to their feedback we have improved our plugin and learn’t a lot about the whole process. The latest version, 1.3, has more useful options and even downloads everything you need into a text file.

Use it to migrate your data to other CMSs, back-up your posts, or make multiple changes in Excel.

We strongly support all data freedom initiatives and wish that every website offered Excel-friendly options for exporting data. Wouldn’t it be great if Facebook or Google would offer this service? We should really ask ourselves why these companies are so reluctant to allow their own users the freedom to export the content they create.

You’ll want to make sure you have PHP running as FastCGI, and not as an Apache module. To configure this in Plesk:

1. Click on ‘Domains’
2. Click on the control panel link for your WordPress domain
3. Click on ‘Websites and Domains’
4. Click on the domain in the list of domains at the bottom
5. Next to “PHP support”, there is a drop-down box next to “run as”. Select “FastCGI Module”.
6. Make sure ‘FastCGI support’ checkbox is checked.
7. Click ‘OK’ to save your changes.

• Folders should have 755 permissions (rwxr-xr-x)
• Most files should be 644 (rw-r–r–)
• Files with secrets, such as ‘wp-config.php’, should be 600 (rw——-)
• All files within should be owned by the FTP user for that domain, and the group owner should be ‘psacln’

We are now actively looking for alternative themes. We have mainly been using Thesis to sketch out sites and build mock-ups for clients, so we’re looking for another GPL compliant theme that does the same. We are currently looking at Canvas, Genesis and Hybrid. If you have other suitable suggestions, we would love to hear about them!

The other day I talked about micro-blogging and mega-blogging and shared my view that new forms of social media, including micro-blogging, are complementary to blogging. We’ve seen ongoing growth at WordPress.com as people started using Twitter, and we expect that to continue.
